Make Up For Ever Face & Body Liquid Make Up (Ivory 20)

Remember back at the end of March, I promised a review about the Make Up For Ever Face & Body Liquid Make Up and if it really is waterproof?

A promise is a promise. Here it is at last.

Originally, I had set out to buy the shade Pink 36 but it was always sold out at Sephora. When I went to the MUFE counter at SM Aura last January, Pink 36 was not available and only Pink Porcelain 38 and Ivory 20 were swatched on my jawline for shade comparison. Shade 38 was too light and 20 was a little warm but totally workable. The SA and my friend — the one who tried it out in Boracay — both agreed I was an Ivory.

Did I purchase one right then and there? Hell, no.

A 50mL bottle retails in the Philippines around Php 2,500 and only $40 in Sephora (Php 1840 excluding tax). So I bid my time and ordered one thru a friend.

The Promise:

The secret is all in this top-selling formula. This waterproof, ultra-light, water-based gel contains no emulsifiers and provides a totally natural, satin finish. Ideal for normal skin-types as well as for fine lines and large pores. Gives skin a uniform tone without accentuating imperfections. A makeup artist’s favorite.

Dany’s Tip: “This foundation is also formulated for the body. Apply a fine layer, let dry three minutes, then blot the excess with a tissue before getting dressed.”

The Review:

The bottle comes with a pump and needs to be shaken well before every use or else you’ll get a pump full of “clumpy” foundation, meaning, gel-like and watery in unequal parts. I need about one and a half pump to cover my entire face. The water-based formula, which has the thinnest consistency I have ever experienced in a foundation, is easy to blend — fingers, sponge or brush. Take your pick.

The coverage is sheer and buildable but with a natural finish. Not matte and not dewy either, just plain better looking skin (MSBB anyone?). It reduced the redness on my cheeks and chin and minimized the appearance of my pores. It is so lightweight, it felt I had nothing on and it looked like I had no foundation on too even when I piled it on! Staying power? Hell, it lasted me the whole day, all thru the sweat, grime and heat. But be warned though, this liquid foundation smells like your average sunblock. Quite strong on first application but disappears within 5 minutes or so.

And my friend was right. This stuff is waterproof. I was in the pool and at the beach swimming my heart out. I only had to reapply my sunblock every two hours but this liquid foundation had no signs of giving up. For the first time in my life, I stepped out of a pool and still looked like I had a flawless, natural-looking skin which used to dry and break out after hours of exposure from chlorine and salty water.

Waterproof, sweat-proof and humidity-proof? Yes, definitely.

Oil control? I’m sorry to say it only performed average in that regard.  I walked under the heat of the sweltering sun in the afternoon around Taal, Batangas touring some of the heritage sites the place had to offer. My T-zone and cheeks were dewy after 4 hours, a small fact I can overlook with the right mattifying lotion and blotting powder. This product is still ah-mazing, even if it has no lasting oil control (but of course, I’d always prefer a formula that can keep me shine-free longer).

Moreover, my sensitive skin has not had any breakouts since using this. Major points for that one.

Overall, I think this foundation will suit all skin types, particularly those who detest cakey foundation looks and instead, prefer a skin-like, natural finish. It’s great as an everyday foundation formula in a humid climate like the Philippines.
