Queen Helene Mint Julep Masque

I bought the Mint Masque from Healthy Options early in the year just to see what the fuss was about. It’s supposedly suitable for oily and acne-prone skin and I’ve read a lot of positive reviews about it. So I thought why not?

OIL AND PORES GONE IN A MASK

Our original, all-time favorite green masque instantly absorbs excess oil, extracts impurities and helps minimize the appearance of pores. After use, skin is deeply clean with a fresh oil-free feel and healthy looking complexion.

The Review:

Queen Helene Mint Julep Masque2

Queen Helene Mint Julep Masque is essentially a green clay mask that smells like mint toothpaste. It comes in a squeeze tube type of packaging containing 227g/8oz of product. It dries after a few seconds and instructions indicate it should be left on for 5 to 10 minutes before rinsing.

It gave my face a mattified look after I washed it off. It felt cleaner too. However, later during the evening, I FELT my forehead, the sides of my eyes and my jawline having a rougher texture. On closer inspection in the mirror, I saw multiple, skin-colored bumps on those areas, as well as few more on my cheeks.

Damn, they were COMEDONES. (Dermatologically speaking, these are white heads.) I was horrified. The last time I had that many white heads on the forehead and jaw was back in high school when puberty hit. So I immediately geared myself towards resolving my comedonal reaction. The following day, more white heads had erupted on my jawline and cheeks. I’ve gone over the ingredients several times now and I figured it may have been the spearmint. I had a different clay mask before and I did not have this kind of reaction.

Anyway, this is exactly the reason why I am so picky with my skincare. The skin is so much vulnerable after you had cleansed it. The fact that skincare products are the first ones to be applied routinely makes me wary of just about any kind of promising benefits touted by different brands.

So, in conclusion, I am never ever touching this mint mask ever again, for as long as I live. Lesson learned. Not every skincare product works for everyone. It’s a damn shame too because it claims to benefit anyone with acne-prone and oily skin. Unfortunately, this mint mask is not for my sensitive skin.

Are you using this particular clay mask? Any untoward reactions you want to divulge? Or maybe it works for you?

    • Hi Bea! Since my skin erupted into comedones, I changed my skincare routine immediately. Washing with a mild and gentle cleanser twice a day is a given. I changed my toner from the SK-II to one that contains 2% salicylic acid, also twice a day after cleansing the face. After the toner, in the morning, I’d apply benzoyl peroxide gel all over my face. Personally, I skipped a moisturizer but if it you prefer to use one, I’d suggest something that’s hypoallergenic and catered to a sensitive skin. At night, I’d apply adapalene gel, again all over my face (don’t put this on the lids and below the eyes though) or a topical tretinoin cream can work too. Sunblock before sun exposure is a must because all the topicals I mentioned are keratolytic so your skin will be sensitive to UV.

Just a reminder, be patient with this regimen for at least a few weeks. Give it time to work. I always tell my patients that resolution of acne does not happen in days but I hope this will help you. Send me a message if you have other questions. Happy new year! 🙂
